Tenuta Sant’ Antonio Valpolicella 2007

Remarkably full-bodied for a Valpolicella. The thick, lush red fruit is startling. But the crescendo quickly softens and that rustic, somewhat herbal Italian finish comes shining through. This wine would be a great companion with red pasta sauces, well-seasoned pork, pate’ or Asiago cheese.

Cantele Salice Salentino

David Ferrie

Cantele Salice Salentino

This Italian is from Salento, which forms the southernmost part of Puglia and flanks the Adriatic and Iona Seas. This red presents with a lush, intense black raspberry nose. The flavors are a bit lean with a soft red fruit, which would appeal to people looking for an alternative to Pinot Noir. This has an elegant, smooth and lithe mouth-feel, delivering a pleasant, albeit short finish

They say good things come to those who wait, well “GREAT” things come to those who take their time and do things right. I have had the privilege of tasting wines for Kafvino and I’ve found a “GREAT” gem of a wine to share with you.  If you have traveled to Italy you have probably been to the famous regions of Tuscany, Piedmont, or Lombardy, but have you ever heard of a region in the southern tip of the boot heel called “Salice Salentino” DOC.

This 2004 Rosso Riserva produced by Cantele is 85% Negroamaro and 15% Malvasia Nera.  Matured for six months, this deep ruby colored red wine has an explosive nose of dark fruits and spice. As soon as the wine hits your palette you are overcome with a burst of luscious red fruit and well balanced tannins with great acidity. The finish on this wine is long and smooth, a perfect pairing with your favorite pizza or pasta or just a simple cheese plate. In my wine career I have always tried to find those outside the box wines and with the Cantel Salice Salentino 2004 Rosso Riserva I’ve found one.  Oh Yeah…they make an amazing Primitivo as well.  The price for this Vino…Wait for It…Under $15!  So come “Pour and Explore” with us at Kafevino and uncover your own hidden gems.
